Today students looked a pictures and decided if they are living or nonliving. they filled out a graphic organizer to determine if the picture has the 8 characteristics of living things.
Students looked at the levels that living things are divided into. We wrote down an example to refer back to as needed. We also learned that humans are animals and that our scientific name is Homo sapiens which in Latin means "man" "wise". Students watched Discovery Channel's Body by Design, Form and function Part 1. As we begin to look at living organisms this video provided an introduction to how different they can be.
Students were able to answer the question of "What makes something living?" today through our observations and a reading in the AMSTI book. We used the class list that we made earlier this week and narrowed it down to the eight things that all living things have in common. We will use these characteristics to determine what is and is not living throughout the semester.
