Today we reviewed the definitions for the Heredity Vocabulary and were introduced to the Miller family. We will be following Mary Miller as she seeks to use her family's health history and her own DNA to discover if she has the same genetic disorder that her brother was recently diagnosed with. We learned what a genetic pedigree is and how to fill that out using Mary, her siblings and her parents.
Today was a housekeeping today. They finished up the graphs from the Growing Animals Lab and finished up the vocabulary definitions along with the picture to help remember the definition of the word. I want to stress how important these words will be as we go through this Genetics unit. We will have several short quizzes on them and will use many of these words daily.
Today we finished up the measurements for the Growing Animals after letting them sit in the water overnight. They graphed their data and then started vocabulary for our new Heredity Unit. This vocabulary is very important in understanding this unit. There will be small quizzes with this vocabulary.
We practiced the process of the scientific method today through the Growing Animals Lab. We reviewed how to write a hypothesis as well as how to identify the different variables (IV, DV, and constants). They practiced taking precise measurements and entering in data on a table.
This was a new lab so we did find that we ran into time constraints and will finish up on Thursday. Welcome back to a new semester. Today we went over our rules and procedures as a refresher. We also set up our new composition notebooks. If you brought your second composition book at the beginning of the year, I still have those. If you didn't, please have it no later than Friday. We added a review of the science skills terms as well as a review of the Scientific Method. Remember we will use these words and steps throughout the year so you should be familiar with it.
