Students completed practicing writing a hypothesis and then we moved to identifying variables in a scientific experiment.

We began our introduction to the scientific method today. Students learned how to write a hypothesis. Sixth period Honors finished up practicing writing a hypothesis and then moved on to parts of an experiment and identifying variables.
Students watched Bill Nye: Greatest discoveries in Chemistry today. After the video, they wrote two paragraphs on what they learned. This served as a general overview for what we will be covering this year.
We completed the Rainbow Lab and discussed measurement error that can occur during an experiment. This type of error can be unavoidable but must be included in any experimental conclusion. Students calculated the total amount of liquid that should be in the test tubes and then measured the actual liquid then answered in #6. The differences were due to this experimental error, such as not precise measurements in the graduated cylinder or the not all of the liquid coming out of the GC when transferring to a test tube. Students also put in the foldable for the Scientific Method to prepare for tomorrow. Sixth Period Honors began to fill in the Scientific Method and How to Write a Hypothesis.
We used the knowledge gained about measurement to complete the Rainbow Lab. Students reviewed precision and accuracy, lab safety, and the importance of following directions. Students learned the importance and the difference in being precise and accurate in measurements and observations. To practice this, they completed measurement stations. At the stations they were able to practice measuring volume, length, mass, and temperature; identify lab equipment; and practice conversions.
Students took their first Friday Five of the year. This is a weekly quiz that covers what we did in class that week. This quiz covered conversion & measurement. After the quiz students used today to catch up on anything that they were lacking in their notebook and finishing up the measurement and conversion practice worksheets as well as the scientific method vocabulary.
Today we practiced using the metric system, conversion and measuring correctly. Students also defined ten words that will be used throughout the year as Scientific Method Vocabulary. The Honors Science class completed lab equipment today before the practice.
Third and seventh period began lab equipment today. They used their textbooks to research what the piece of equipment was called and its function. We then went over the answers as a class. Sixth Period which is Honors Physical Science practiced using scientific notation today. This type of numbering will be used as we go through labs and look at other scientists' experiments.
Today we finished up the metric system foldable showing how to convert between units. We completed the Conversion Challenge |
